What will happen now?
According to Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s counter-disinformation department at the National Security and Defense Council, the first North Korean soldiers stationed in Russia’s Kursk region to support Moscow’s war efforts have reportedly come under fire as of November 4.
However, details about the engagement or any potential casualties among the North Korean troops remain unclear.
U.S. Confirms North Korean Troops in Russia At a recent press conference on October 31, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed reports that around 8,000 North Korean troops had been deployed to Russia’s Kursk region to assist in the conflict against Ukraine.
Although Dagens.com could not independently verify the recent engagement, Blinken’s statement highlights a significant new chapter in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Kursk Region: A Hotspot for Fighting The Kursk region, which has been a key battleground since Ukraine launched a cross-border offensive in early August, is seeing heightened activity.
Russia has positioned North Korean forces here to bolster defenses, while its more experienced troops continue advancing in eastern Ukraine.
Zelensky’s Stance on North Korean Involvement Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that if granted access to Western long-range weapons for use on Russian soil, Ukraine could proactively target “every camp” where North Korean forces are stationed.
Kyiv has also warned that North Korean troops may soon be deployed in active combat, with Ukrainian officials suspecting that Russia may bring in an additional 12,000 North Korean soldiers, including specialized units.
Zelensky has also noted that Russia has openly acknowledged Pyongyang’s involvement in the conflict with Western nations.
