Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Vows to Invade Rafah Despite Ceasefire Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Israel will enter the Palestinian city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, regardless of the outcome of ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of families of individuals held hostage by the Palestinian militant group, Netanyahu asserted, “The idea that we will halt the war before achieving all of its goals is out of the question. We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions there — with or without a deal, in order to achieve total victory.”

The families implored Netanyahu to resist international pressure to cease the conflict in Gaza, as stated in a release by the Prime Minister’s Office. Despite U.S. President Joe Biden’s assertion that an invasion of Rafah would cross a “red line,” Netanyahu remains resolute in his stance.

Israel has been conducting regular airstrikes on Rafah since the conflict began and has threatened to deploy ground troops, citing it as the last Hamas stronghold. Overnight airstrikes on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least 22 individuals, including six women and five children, according to Palestinian health officials.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while condemning potential Israeli attacks on Rafah as “completely unacceptable,” stopped short of labeling it a “red line” that would trigger EU sanctions against Israel during an election debate co-hosted by POLITICO on Monday.

I pray to Odin these families are returned home safely.
