How To Know If It’s Constructive or Destructive Criticism: Negative Criticism can make you feel bad.

Do you feel judged and criticized sometimes?

Recently I encountered a situation where I felt unfairly judged over something that, in that particular context, wasn’t all that important or relevant to the topic being discussed. The topic under discussion was a serious matter but I felt reprimanded over a very small trivial detail, which I found petty and annoying, and I didn’t feel it was constructive criticism.

I found being judged a hurtful experience and it threw me off thinking abstractly. I felt unable to express my thoughts in my own words and this impacted my self-confidence. I was more interested in the serious topic rather than always being perfect or right. I am not perfect and sometimes make mistakes, as humans do.

Reasons why people give destructive criticism

These are possible reasons someone may be hypercritical or give negative criticism, including:-

  • They may not realize they are destructively criticizing.

  • They want to show authority and are politically correct.

  • They are perfectionists who find fault with others.

  • There may be other reasons also.
